A major project designed to put Hull on the map as a high-profile visitor destination has been given the green light by Hull City Council’s cabinet.
The development of a riverside berth and cruise terminal will now move a step closer following approval at a special cabinet meeting.
A report setting out the plans highlights that the development of a cruise terminal could generate a £13m annual injection into Hull’s economy and a further £15m economic boost across the Humber region.
It is also hoped that the riverside berth would have immediate economic benefits in terms of increased visitor numbers and spend within the area directly around the terminal of £900,000 with the potential to rise to £6.3m every year.
Initial investigations have identified Sammy’s Point, adjacent to The Deep as the preferred location for the new riverside berth as it provides easy access for visitors to the city centre and is in close proximity to attractions within the city centre. Albert Dock has also been shortlisted as a potential location.
The council will now begin the search for a private sector partner.
Councillor Steven Bayes, portfolio holder for visitor destination, said: “The development and delivery of a city centre riverside berth will create a long term legacy for Hull, contributing to the wider regeneration of the city centre.
“Importantly, it will also create long-term employment opportunities for our existing workforce and young people in a key sector.”
